How to Tease Your Hair Like a Scene Kid

Have you ever seen one of the young kids with the really big hair and been curious as to how they did it? Or wanted to give it a try for yourself? The combination is pretty unusual—big hair on top in the back with long sleek hair underneath and sleek, sideswept bangs. But how exactly would you go about getting this hairstyle?
So that you know, this can be a very damaging hairstyle. It is not recommended that you do it over and over again. It requires strenuous straightening and teasing. Keep this in mind if you have thinning hair or very thin, fragile hair.
First, you need long or medium length hair. It needs to have choppy layers in the back, and long bangs in the front as well as long sides. The layers in the back need to be about medium length. If they are too short, they will look rather funky and instead of looking stylish, you'll look ridiculous.
Then, you need a comb, a brush, and hairspray. If you have curly or wavy hair, it needs to be straightened (unless you're looking for a Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd look.) and you need to use a frizz serum to keep it looking sleek.
Make a part in the middle going from one side of your head to the other. Then take the back part and brush it back. Arrange the front part how you want it to lay and then leave it that way. If you want, you can clip it so that it doesn't get into your other part, if you like.
Take your hairspray, and spray the roots of your back part. Keep the spray nearby—you'll need it quite a bit. Next, take your comb, and a few locks of hair, and begin to backcomb them, until you have a “poof” in the back. Think eighties hair only backwards. Spray each section as you finish backcombing it. Only let a few top layers be backcombed—the rest should hang down your back as usual.
Next, take your brush and very gently brush the top and back of the poof. Not so much that it is flattened, but enough so that it is smooth looking. Check the back to make sure it looks smooth as well. You do not have to have it perfect, but if all you can see is ratty hair (because of the backcombing), that's all anyone else will see. The key to this hairstyle is for it to look nice and sleek, but also bold.
